What it is?

The Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit that allows international students who have graduated from an eligible school to legally work for anyone and anywhere in Canada. PGWP holders can gain Skilled Canadian work experience that falls under National Occupational Classification (NOC) 0, A, or B which will help them qualify for permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) using Express Entry.

What is the requirement?

Let’s take a look at some of the general requirements and who can get a PGWP.

  • Graduated from an eligible program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
  • Have a valid study permit
  • Program was a minimum of 8 months in duration
  • Program leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate
  • Maintained full-time student status in Canada during the program. Some exceptions exist.
  • The DLI must send you a transcript and official letter confirming that you have met the requirements to complete the program

When to apply?

  • You need to apply for a PGWP within 180 days after your school issues your final marks

Work while waiting for PGWP

  • You can work full time without a work permit while you are waiting for a decision on your PGWP application if you made the application before your study permit expired.
  • If you receive a PGWP, your spouse or common-law partner may also be eligible to apply for an open work permit. Depending on your unique situation, there may be more regulations, exceptions, or details regarding PGWP.

Key information you need to know

  • You can only receive a PGWP once in your life. Don’t waste it!
  • PGWPs are issued based on the length of your study program for a minimum of 8 months up to a maximum of 3 years. (Remember that CEC Express Entry requires a minimum of 1 year of skilled Canadian work experience)
  • Make sure your passport is valid for the whole duration of your eligible working period, otherwise they will only issue up to the point of validity
  • If your study permit expires before you can apply for PGWP, you need to apply for a study permit extension first.
