Career Readiness for International Students

What is career readiness and why is it important?

Career readiness refers to the comprehensive set of skills, knowledge, and competencies that individuals need to be successful in the workplace. It goes beyond solely academic achievements and encompasses a broader set of skills. In fact, the Government of Canada identified nine skills that are necessary to participate and thrive in work and life. These skills are: numeracy, communication, creativity & innovation, problem solving, digital competence, collaboration, adaptability and writing. 

Therefore, career readiness prepares individuals to meet the demands of the modern workforce and navigate the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of employment. In fact, did you know that less than half of employers (46%) believe college prepares students to join the workforce?

Career readiness is more important now than ever before due to technological advancements and AI. In fact,  as many as 300 million jobs could be affected by automation. Career readiness ensures that individuals are equipped to navigate these changes, remain competitive, and seize emerging opportunities in the evolving landscape of employment.

Implementing Career Readiness Initiatives

To have truly strong career readiness initiatives and implement them there must be alignment with the strategic goals of the institutions and involvement from all stakeholders involved. Here are some strategies and initiatives:

  1. Curriculum integration: One of the most effective ways to foster a culture of career readiness is by integrating it into the university curriculum. This involves aligning course content with industry needs, offering practical learning experiences such as internships and project-based assignments, and embedding career-related skills development into core courses.   3. Industry partnerships: Collaborating with industry partners is another effective way for universities to foster a culture of career readiness. By forming partnerships with businesses, organizations, and alumni networks, universities can offer students opportunities for internships, co-op placements, and mentorship programs.   4. Help you students understand the nuances of the Canadian job market: International students often encounter challenges in comprehending the intricacies of the Canadian job market. This can include unfamiliarity with key industries in Canada and a lack of awareness regarding the timelines for applying to co-op programs. Furthermore, they may not fully grasp the importance of networking in securing employment opportunities. In a recent survey conducted by Wayble, 35% of international students expressed a desire for more support from their institutions in networking, including assistance in making connections and guidance on effective networking strategies
